Religion is a belief in some super natural power; it’s a belief in more something more real and meaningful than life. Religion means commitment towards someone greater than a normal person understands.
Religion performs certain functions when talking about both from the point of view of individual and social perspective. The first and one of the most important ones is that religion provides humans mental peace. In this competitive world amidst so many stresses related to work, jobs, families, dangers, insecurities, there is only religion which provides people emotional support and makes them feel at peace. With a peaceful mind and a support from a being much greater than humans strengthens self-confidence in people as well. Confidence boosts because religion teaches us to work hard and with full dedication and honesty in work. There are social functions also performed by religion which extend because religion generates greater good for society in form of promoting social virtues like trust worthy, honesty, integrity, brotherhood, welfare for all, etc (Sunil, 2014). No matter what religion is followed by people, all religions encourage and appreciate a just economic system which provides an equal distribution of wealth and income as well as reduce the burden on certain sectors of the economy by being there for them and providing them self-service .
Religion gives a person his identity, name, customs, shared values and a culture and sometimes even a language. This is why religion has the function of providing a complete code of life to people. Religions unite people and make them happy by providing them common festivals and rituals and give meaning to their worldly affairs as well as guide their actions. With the guidance provide by religion, people get to know their limitations and boundaries and therefore they restrain themselves from indulging in wrong or unethical activities like robberies, crimes, extra marital affairs, drugs, etc. Religion gave people a meaning and purpose of life and created their history. Another function of religion is to provide recreation to its people by giving them festivals like Christmas when people meet with each other, enjoy healthy meals, celebrate and socialize. Another very important function of religion is that it influences the political system of a country. For example, Islam favors democracy in its religion and so people in Pakistan and other Muslim countries follow it. Politicians take oaths in the name of God and make a promise to their people that they will follow all the guidelines taught by their shared religion.
